Have goals to look forward to

Feeling good about the future is important for our happiness. We all need goals to motivate us and these need to be challenging enough to excite us, but also achievable. If we try to attempt the impossible this brings unnecessary stress.

Choosing ambitious but realistic goals gives our lives direction and brings a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction when we achieve them.  Read more

What are your most important goals?

Tell us

Self-improvement; being a good friend for my friends and "being there" for my family; workplace goals (working towards chairmanship of our committe etc.) and promotion; lifestyle goals....I want a certain lifestyle and I'm prepared to make changes until it works as I want it; travelling the world...as mentioned previously....

To bring up happy and balanced children. To have a happy and fulfilling family life. To continue to grow and develop. To facilitate others in their growth, development and wellbeing.

One of my biggest challenges is remembering to live more in the present and stop worrying about the future - so one goal is to enjoy the moment more! My biggest hopes for the future are to do work that makes a real positive difference in the world and to be a good dad and husband. Helping my kids feel loved, valued and getting them on the right path for a happy and fulfilling life is really important to me. Mark, Kingston, Surrey2 Sep 2010, 13:31

Happiness facts

Our happiness is not set in stoneAlthough our genes influence about 50% of the variation in our personal happiness, our circumstances (like income and environment) affect only about 10%.

As much as 40% is accounted for by our daily activities and the conscious choices we make. So the good news is that our actions really can make a difference.

Optimism helps us achieve our goalsResearch shows that people who are optimistic tend to be happier, healthier and cope better in tough times.

"Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined"
- Henry David Thoreau
