At work

People work best when they feel good about themselves. And happy employees make organisations more successful. But for many of us, work detracts from happiness rather than adding to it.

We can all help to create a more positive workplace by the way we approach our jobs. Our work can also provide great opportunities to connect with others, use our strengths, be engaged, learn, achieve goals and find meaning.  Read more

How are you creating a happier workplace?

Tell us

My paid employment is all about helping others. I provide administrative support for a counselling charity, yet most of my day is taken up with providing listening support for our clients. It is not in my job description, but I am not going to turn down someone's request for help just to get the filing done

I am a nurse and although I get paid for my job I feel in that momnet of caring for my patient I try to give so much comfort and kindness.

Tracey, Bangor, UK2 Sep 2010, 13:31
The idea of happiness at work used to seem all wrong to me - surely we're just there to get the job done? But over the years I've found that we tend to get much better outcomes when working in teams where people are positive, engaged and care about each other as well as the task at hand. I'm now convinced that having a happy attitude and atmosphere in an organisation is vital. Mark, Kingston, Surrey2 Sep 2010, 13:31

Happiness facts

Happiness leads to success

Most people think that if they become successful, then they'll be happy. But recent discoveries in psychology and neuroscience show that this formula is backward: Happiness fuels success, not the other way around.

When we're positive, our brains are more motivated, engaged, creative, energetic, resilient, and productive.
