Do things for others

Helping others is not only good for them and a good thing to do, it also makes us happier and healthier too.

Giving also connects us to others, creating stronger communities and helping to build a happier society for everyone. And it's not all about money - we can also give our time, ideas and energy.

So if you want to feel good, do good!  Read more

What do you do to help others?

Tell us

Offer advice and support to friends and family in need Making time for people that need my help or assistance regardless of whether they are friends, colleagues or strangers. Try to be polite and courteous in all situations and to always see the best in people, in the hope (perhaps misguided!) that my behavior will be contagious and that if everyone behaved that way then we could make a real change to society.

For me, helping others is about both the big things - like the job we do - and the small things - just the way we are with people. Through my work I've chosen to do something that I hope makes a positive contribution, and through my daily actions I try to be a force for good. I'm no saint but I always try to look out for people and help where I can. Mark, Kingston, Surrey2 Sep 2010, 13:31

I give to charity, I sponsor an orphan in Uganda, Im involved in a community housing project and also in a community fruit harvesting project, I campaign for social and environmental justice, I try to be a good friend to people, I try to have a positve can-do attiutude in life (at work and at home), I am friendly to strangers/neighbours/random people on the bus etc, I try not to live my life in a way that compromises other peoples abil;ity to live theirs (now and in the future).

I run a local food group on a voluntary basis, which organises fun, interactive local events - I think people enjoy the events that we run! I always try to be friendly and if people need help, I will offer it. Doing a "good deed" always makes me feel good! Also I think in an indirect way my work as a researcher helps people, by improving the control of neglected diseases.

Happiness facts

Giving is good for youWhen we give to others it activates the areas of the brain associated with pleasure, social connection and trust.

Altruistic behaviour releases endorphins in the brain and boosts happiness for us as well as the people we help. Studies have shown that giving money away tends to make people happier than spending it on themselves.
