Family & friends

When it comes to happiness, our nearest and dearest really matter. Research shows people who have strong relationships with a partner, family or close friends are happier, healthier and live longer. And it works both ways - for us and for them too.

Unfortunately we often take our closest relationships for granted. Maintaining them takes conscious attention and effort and there are things we can all do that make a difference.  Read more

Listening - giving time to listen to friends and family when they need to talk or unburden Visiting friend in nursing home when I can Taking widowed mother-in-law out at weekends Sending flowers or a card to cheer someone up Suggesting ideas for friend's project and giving her some materials

Make time for friends to listen to their issues and try to help come to solutions. Try and make things better at work so people get the information they need

One of the big dilemmas people face is what's best to do for their family: work as hard as possible to provide for them - or be there as much as possible, even if that means putting work as a lower priority. I've got a young family and I'm definitely in the latter camp - love, time and support are much more important for a family than a bigger house, expensive holiday or more new stuff. I love Nick

Hayley Derien, Tas2 Sep 2010, 13:31

Im sitting in my living room looking for resources to help me and my boyfriend - who broke up last Thursday. I cant explain the pain I am in, as he is not well and is on his 2nd week of anti-depressants. The thought of not being there to support him is killing me, he is blanking me out completely, wont answer calls, texts, emails. We were so happy and a sequence of events have had an impact. I so wish that he can reach out to me and that we can find happiness together. AS Hertfordshire 28

Happiness facts

Together we're stronger

Having a network of social connections or high levels of social support has been shown to increase our immunity to infection, lower our risk of heart disease and reduce mental decline as we get older.

Not having close personal ties has been shown to pose significant risks for our health.
