Newsletter 1: Thanks for all your support

27 Oct 2010 | Richard Layard, Geoff Mulgan, Anthony Seldon

Thank you so much to everyone who has signed up to join us so far - it's wonderful to have your support. This is a long overdue update on what's been going on.

Since we first discussed the idea of a Movement for Happiness in public we have been overwhelmed with support from all over the world. Over 1,500 people have already joined us from 48 different countries. It has been truly inspiring to read all the offers of help.

We're sorry that some of you have had to wait a long time to hear more about our plans. We've been busy meeting people and listening to ideas, as well as putting in place some initial funding and basic office facilities.

We're delighted to announce that we have now appointed an excellent director, Mark Williamson, to lead our activities. He started work just a few weeks ago and brings a wonderful range of skills, experience and ideas. We had over 150 applicants for the role, many of whom could have done the job. Happily many of them have also offered to help Mark in his new role.

We now have the exciting challenge of turning all the ideas and energy into a mass movement for social change. To support this we are about to start building an interactive website packed with practical ideas that people can use to make positive changes in their personal lives, homes, schools, workplaces and communities.

We plan to launch early next year. Within months, our aim is to have thousands of supporters taking action in groups throughout the country. Our initial focus will be the UK, but beyond that we hope to expand to create a global movement.

Before launch we want to see people all over the country taking actions to help build a happier society which can act as examples for others to follow. Your support will be invaluable so we would love you to be involved in this.

If you've already signed up then Mark will contact you very soon to explain more. If you've yet to sign up then please join us now.

Yours in hope for a happier society,

Richard Layard
